Dr. Z. D. ZHANG

¡¡¡¡Zhang Zhi-dong, born in June 1963. He received B.S. degree in the department of Physics, Nanjing University, in 1983. He became a graduate student of the Institute of Metal Research (IMR), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), under supervisor of Academician Prof. Y.C. Chuang and Prof. C.H. Wu and received his M.S. degree in 1986. He received his Ph.D degree in 1989, promoted by co-supervisors of Academician Prof. Y.C. Chuang, Prof. X.K. Sun and Prof. F.R. de Boer.

¡¡¡¡During his Ph.D study, Zhang Zhi-dong focused his interest in structural and magnetic properties of ternary Fe-based rare-earth transition-metal intermetallics. He systematically investigated the structure and magnetic properties of Nd-Fe-B and Nd-Fe-C type compounds. Based on the single ion theory, a model was established to interpret non-linear composition dependence of magnetocrystalline anisotropy coefficients. Based on the results in his thesis, more than 10 papers were published in international journals, like Phys.Rev.B.

¡¡¡¡Dr. Zhang Zhi-dong has been engaged in research on the fields of magnetism, magnetic materials and their applications. His work has involved the spin wave theory, new rare-earth transition-metal compounds, nanocomposite magnetic materials, magnetic phase transitions and applications of magnetic materials. He became an associate Professor in May 1992, a full Professor in January 1993. He was promoted to be the head of the Department of Magnetism and Magnetic Materialsand Ph.D supervisors in 1995, that of the Department of Material Physics in 1997. He is the Advisory Board Member of the Journal of Physics: Condensed Matters since Jan. 2000. He was one of chair-Professors of the IMR from Mac. 1999 to Dec. 2003. He is currently the director of the Magnetism and Magnetic Materials Division , Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science.

¡¡¡¡Dr. Zhang Zhi-dong and his colleague succeeded in synthesizing Sm-Fe-N magnets with high magnetic properties, using mechanical alloying and hydrogenation processes. They investigated systematically the structures and phase transitions of metastable rare-earth phases. A breakthrough on the technique of preparing ultra-high coercivity magnets lead to a world record of 96 kOe. The spin configurations, spin waves and magnetic phase transitions in a two-sublattice system, the spin waves in a multi-sublattice system and superlattices were studied by analytical method and computer simulation. The advances in understanding the mechanism of technologies of magnetic treatments were great helpful for the project of application of these technologies in Oilfields. He received several national and CAS awards for either the natural sciences or the advance in sciences and technology.

¡¡¡¡Recently, a great progress was made in the light rare-earth giant magnetostrictive materials, the magnetic ultrafine particles and nanocapsules, the exchange coupling and quantum interference in magnetic thin films, the nanocomposite magnets and giant magnetoresistance. More than six hundred papers has been published in international journals, such as Nature, Adv. Mater., Adv. Funct. Mater, J. Amer. Chem. Soc., ACS Nano, Applied Physics Letters, Physical Review B, J. Physics and J. Applied Physics, etc. One invited review article on the rare-earth metastable phase was published in J. Phys. D Appl.Phys. Other eleven review articles on the topics of the spin waves in magnetic thin films and superlattices, the quantum interference in double quantum wells, the magnetic nanocapsules, the new rare-earth intermetallics.
