during June 2-3, 2010. During his visit, he gave a talk
on “Recent progress of MAX
phases”, discussed the
cooperation between IMR and CEA, and visited Jannus
irradiation facilities and Soleil synchrotron center. |
Dr.Jian
Luo, an associate professor of Materials
Science and Engineering at the Clemson University visited
the High-performance Ceramic Division, Shenyang National
Laboratory for Materials Science during May 27-30, 2010.
He gave a talk entitled “Interfacial
“Phase” Transitions: Solving Old Materials Science Problems
and Tackling New Energy Challenges”
and discussed the faculties and students of High-performance
Ceramic Division. |

Dr.
Edwin R Fuller, Jr, who is the quest scientist
of National Institute Standards and Technology, USA and
the president of the American Ceramic Society, visited
High-performance Ceramic Division. He gave a lecture entitled
“Hyperthermia efficacy of nanoparticles for cancer therapy”
during his visit and also met professor Ke Lu, director
of IMR. |

Hua-Tay Lin,
distinguished R&D staff
member, Group Lead of Ceramic Science and Technology Group,
Materials Science and Technology Division, Oak Ridge National
Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, obtained Hsun Lee Lecture
Award. He visited the High-performance Ceramic Division,
SYNL and IMR from Sept. 21 to Sept. 24, 2009. During his
visit, he discussed with Prof. Zhou and his students,
and gave his Hsun Lee lecture on “Implementation
of Advanced Ceramics and Composites for High Energy Efficiency
and Clean Emission Turbine Engines”

Prof. Michael J. Hoffmann from
Institute for Ceramics in Mechanical Engineering at University
of Karlsruhe visited High-performance Ceramic Division
during Aug. 15-16, 2009, before the CICC-6. He gave a
lecture on “Colloidal processing of Alumina” during his
visit. |
Prof.
Subhash Mahajan,
Professor of Arizona State University and coordinating
editor of Acta Materialia, visited High-performance Ceramic
Division and discussed with Prof. Yanchun Zhou in July
14, 2009 during his visit of IMR/SYNL. He is a recipient
of Hsun Lee Lecture Award, and during his visit in Shenyang
(July 11-July 18, 2009), he gave two lectures entitled
“Formation of Deformation Twins in Metallic Crystals”
and “ Accommodation of Deformation Twins in Metals and
Alloys”. |

Dr.
Mrityunjay Singh, a chief scientist in
Ohio Aerospace Institute, NASA Glenn Research Center,
Cleveland, Ohio, obtained Hsun Lee Lecture Award. He visited
the High-performance Ceramic Division, SYNL and IMR from
June 26-July 1, 2009. During his visit, he met Prof. Ke
Lu, director of IMR, and gave a Hsun Lee lecture on “Ceramic
Integration Technologies for Energy and Environmental
Applications: Technical Challenges
and Opportunities”. |
Prof. Gary L. Messing
Distinguished Professor of Ceramic Science and Engineering
and Head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering
at the Pennsylvania State University obtained Hsun Lee
Lecture Award. He visited the High-performance Ceramic
Division, SYNL and IMR during June 7-9, 2009, and gave
a Hsun Lee lecture on “Seeding
and Templated Grain Growth for Control of Phase Formation,
Microstructure, and Properties of Piezoelectric and Structural
Ceramics ”. |
Prof.
David Green from Pennsylvania State University obtained Hsun Lee Lecture Award. He visited the High-performance
Ceramic Division, SYNL and IMR during May 19-22, 2009,
and gave a Hsun Lee lecture on “Constrained Sintering:
A Delicate Balance of Scales”. |

Sino-German joint symposium on advanced materials and
technology was held during May 18-19, 2009 in Shenyang.

G. Nickel from Eberhard-Karls-University Tuebingen,
Prof. Jingyang Wang and
Prof. Yanchun Zhou from High-performance
Ceramic Division attended the symposium and gave overviews

Prof.
Masahiro
Yoshimura from Tokyo Institute of Technology obtained Hsun Lee Research Award from IMR/SYNL and visited High-performance
Ceramic Division during April 21-May 15, 2009. During
his visit he gave several lectures on including “Soft
Processing for Advanced Ceramics: Single-step Fabrication
of Nano-Structured Ceramics (Particles, Films, Integrated
Layers and Patterns) from Solutions without Firing”, “Feature
and Future of Hydrothermal Reactions for Materials synthesis
and Materials Science” etc. He also discussed with the
faculties and students in High-performance Ceramic Division
on different subject of ceramics science and technology.

A Sino-France seminar on the
synthesis, microstructure and properties of MAX phases
and related materials was held in Shenyang
during April 22-25, 2009. Researchers from France Nuclear
Energy Commission (CEA) and Institute of Metal Research
(IMR) presented the recent progress on MAX phases and
their potential applications in G-IV reactors. |
