After receiving his Ph.D. degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 2000, Professor Samuel Mao started his career at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory as a staff scientist, and returned to U.C. Berkeley campus in 2004, when he also established the Clean Energy Engineering Laboratory that has spun off an international technology development and commercialization organization, the Institute of New Energy, launched in 2013. Having published 150 research articles that have received more than 30,000 citations, Prof. Mao is also an inventor of 50 patents in the U.S. and abroad. He delivered nearly 100 invited keynote or plenary speeches at international conferences, and served as a technical committee member, program review panelist, grant proposal evaluator, and nationlaboratory observer for the U.S. Department of Energy. In addition to co-founding three international materials and energy technology conferences, he co-chaired Materials Research Society (MRS) annual meeting in the spring of 2011, and the International Conference on Clean Energy in 2012. Prof. Mao received a “R&D 100” Technology Award (2011) for his technological innovation, and a Berkeley MEGSCO Faculty Teaching Award (2008) for his dedication to higher education. He is also a co-founder of eight high tech companies.

报告人:Paul Burrows

Dr. Paul Burrows is Senior Vice President for Research at the Institute for New Energy, Shenzhen, China. He has over 110 publications in refereed journals and is a co-inventor of 118 issued U.S. Patents in the field of organic semiconductors, thin film technology and solid state lighting. Dr. Burrows obtained the PhD degree in Physics from Queen Mary College, University of London, in 1989 working on the design and fabrication of molecular electronic devices. From 1990 – 1991 he was a Research Scientist in the Frontier Research Program at the Riken Institute in Japan where he helped develop the ultra-high vacuum deposition of organic materials. Burrows also held research appointments at the University of Southern California and Princeton University, where he was a Research Scholar from 1997 to 2000, contributing to the creation of Universal Display Corporation (now Nasdaq listed) and a co-inventor of organic phosphorescent LEDs and stacked, color-tunable OLEDs. He subsequently joined Pacific Northwest National Laboratory as a Laboratory Fellow in the Energy Science and Technology Directorate where he won a Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer award for excellence in technology transfer in 2002 for the thin film encapsulation technology that formed the basis for Vitex Systems, sold to Samsung in 2010. In 2008, he founded Reata Research, from where he consults for U.S. government and industry.
