Multiscale Interfaces Design in Solid (MINDs)

Dr. Jian Wang
Mechanical and Materials Engineering, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE 68588

Interfaces are common planar defects in solids. Interface can act as barriers, sinks and sources for other defects. By tailoring structures and properties of interfaces, materials can be designed to achieve unusual properties, such as high strength, good ductility, high toughness, and high irradiation tolerance. To achieve this goal, multi-scale methods including experiment and theory and modeling are necessary. This can be accomplished through three steps: (1) Discover unusual behavior related to interfaces, (2) Develop theory and fundamental understanding of interface-dominated behavior, and (3) Transform fundamental understanding into a meso-/micro-/macro- scale capability of discovering, predicting, and designing superior materials (strength, ductility, toughness, radiation). In this talk, I will present fundamental principles in developing interface-dominated composites, and the development of experimental techniques and materials modeling tools at different scales.

Dr. Jian Wang is a professor at the Department of Materials and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln since Aug. 2015, after he spent 9 years as technical staff member at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). He received his Ph.D from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, USA, in 2006. His research is focusing on quantitatively exploring the structure-properties relationships of structural and nanostructured materials using multi-scale theory, modeling and experimental methods and techniques. He was awarded the LANL Distinguished Postdoctoral Performance Award (2009), the LDRD/Early Career Award (2011), two LDRD-ER Awards (2013), TMS MPMD Young Leader Award (2013), and International Plasticity Young Research Award (2015). He served as Editorial Board of International Journal of Plasticity (2015~), Scientific Reports (2016~), and several others. He has published more than ~200 peer-reviewed papers (> 6900 citations and H-index = 50, 25 papers selected as Hottest Articles in Materials Science, and 5 papers featured as Journal cover), and delivered 100+ invited/keynote presentations.
